About the Opportunity
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority
Life within the Center for Student Involvement, the Fraternity and
Sorority Life Specialist (FSL Specialist) serves as a member of the
Center for Student Involvement (CSI) team and participates in the
development, enrichment and assessment of the university's vibrant
and diverse Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) community. This
position is one of three full-time staff who support 35+ social
Greek-letter organizations and approximately 2,900 affiliated
students, or 13% of the undergraduate student population at
Northeastern. The FSL Specialist supports students and chapters
that are part of the four governing councils: Interfraternity
Council (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), National
Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), Panhellenic Council (PC).
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Advise governing councils and individual chapters on short and
long-term goals, operational excellence, event planning, risk
management, health and wellness, and expansion and recruitment
procedures.
- Provide event planning support to chapters by coordinating
event logistics for on and off campus events including but not
limited to fundraising approvals, facilities/space requests, and
compliance with university and their membership organization's
event policies.
- Advise organizations on community service and philanthropy
programs and hold chapter leaders accountable for completing
inter/national program requirements.
- Identify areas of education/trainings needed for the governing
councils or individual chapters.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director to coordinate and
implement curriculum for students in the FSL community in the areas
of health and wellness, identity and leadership exploration,
membership expectations, and inclusive community building.
- Provide support to the Associate Director of Fraternity and
Sorority Life in collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct &
Conflict Resolution (OSCCR) and Office for University Equity &
Compliance (OUEC) to address organizational misconduct.
- Oversee the roster management system, ensuring compliance with
chapters completing required forms each semester (CSI bi-annual
re-registration, new member registration form, member withdrawal
form, and initiation report).
- Supervise, train, and evaluate a semesterly co-op student (if
applicable) in conjunction with other CSI staff members.
- Lead chapter services initiatives.
- Implement meaningful chapter coach meeting structure.
- Utilize technology solutions to enhance and elevate chapter
communication and documentation.
- Monitor trends and issues relevant to student development and
fraternities and sororities. Design and implement volunteer
engagement efforts.
- Serve as a liaison to inter/national membership organizations
and their headquarters staff, and the local/regional volunteers
(chapter advisors) for community development purposes.
- Coordinate, execute, and evaluate signature FSL annual events
such as FSL Awards, Take it to the Floor, Greek Sing, New England
Stepfest, Greek Week, and more.
- Explore and develop new community building programming events
for all affiliated students to help foster a more inclusive and
connected Fraternity & Sorority Life community.
- Support major events, initiatives, and committees that
originate within the Center for Student Involvement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Minimum up to two years experience in student activities, major
event management and fraternity/sorority life community
development. Preference will be given to candidates with direct
experience advising fraternal organizations.
- Candidates should have an awareness of specific trends and
issues affecting fraternities and sororities on an inter/national
level, and should identify industry-wide best practices in
fraternity/sorority advising to enhance the FSL community.
- Desire to work at a fast-paced, global university is essential
as well as a strong commitment to diversity, equity and
inclusion.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and exceptional interpersonal,
organizational, verbal/written communication skills and knowledge
of social media platforms and techniques.
